About Grace

A Brief History

On September 20, 1956, the Bible Baptist Church was organized and met in the American Legion building on Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC, with 20 charter members. The church soon purchased property on Rose Lane in October 1956 at which time the church changed its name to Poole Road Baptist Church. In November 1959 property was purchased on Peartree Lane but was later sold.  In 1964 property on Sunnybrook Road was purchased and a building completed in 1965. During this time the church went through another name change to Grace Baptist Church. Then in 1998, the church sold the Sunnybrook Road facility, and moved to its present location at 3305 Old Milburnie Road, Raleigh, NC.

There have been six pastors to serve the church throughout its history beginning with its founding pastor, H.W. Carey, and then A.R. Hite, Walter Webster, Gary Nave, Matt Kimak and James Holliday.

Grace Baptist Church is an evangelical, friendly, and genuine New Testament body of believers seeking to live and share the dynamic, abundant life in Jesus Christ.

Grace Baptist Church is the Place for You!

A Place to Glorify God. Grace is not seeking to build a kingdom unto itself, but to advance the kingdom of God.

A Place to Worship God Through Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To worship is to focus our attention on the One who makes life possible, express our praise to the Savior, and listen as God speaks through His Word.

A Place to Make Disciples. Grace is committed to making known the message of Jesus Christ to those who have never experienced the forgiveness of sin and the promise of eternal life in Heaven. This is accomplished through outreach ministries, both home and abroad.

A Place to Edify and Equip the Saints. The truth is, people are looking for answers to the tough questions of life. The answers to those questions are found in the pages of the Scripture. We are committed to creatively communicate Biblical truth. Expositional preaching and relative teaching is essential in order for believers to be built up in the Christian faith and to be trained for ministry.

A Place to Make Friendships. Friendship means an open door and an open heart. To us, friendship is more than social activities. It is having friends who we can turn to in our time of need, friends we can trust. Friendship means. . . GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH!

A Place to Build the Family. The family is the building block of society. It has been bruised and broken because of society’s pressure cooker. One of our purposes is to provide encouragement, instruction, and support for the family. We want to help you weave Biblical principles into the fabric of your family life.

What We Believe

The Scriptures

We believe the Holy Bible, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God without error. We believe the Bible to be the true center of Christian union and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and opinions shall be tried.

The True God

We believe in one God, creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons–Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Father

We believe in God the Father, an infinite personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love. We believe He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of humanity, He hears and answers prayer, and He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.

The Son, Jesus Christ

We believe Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He lived a sinless life. He died on the cross as the sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven where, at the right hand of the Father, He now is our high priest and advocate.

The Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit is a Divine Person, equal with the Father and the Son. The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and, during this age, to convict individuals of sin, regenerate the believing sinner, and indwell, guide, instruct, and empower the believer for godly living, service and ministry.

We believe in the Genesis account of creation, and that it is to be accepted literally, not allegorically or figuratively. We believe that creation is not a matter of evolution or evolutionary change of species, or development through interminable periods of time from lower to higher forms; that all animal and plant life was made directly and God’s established law was that they should bring forth only “after their kind.”

We believe angels are created, spirit-beings of various ranks and order. The company of everlasting beings are super-human in intelligence and strength. They were created holy and good, but due to sin many fell from their holy state and now confirmed to wickedness. Those who preserved their integrity are God’s messengers, whereas the fallen angels execute Satan’s desires in hindering God’s work and afflicting God’s people until God’s judgment of eternal justice of them in the lake of fire.

We believe God created men and women in the image of God. We believe every person is a sinner by nature and choice, and is spiritually dead. We also believe those who repent of sin and trust Jesus Christ as Savior are regenerated by the Holy Spirit.

We believe salvation is a free gift of God and is received by each person through faith in Jesus Christ, apart from any human merit, works or ritual. We believe the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only grounds for salvation for all who believe, and only those who receive Jesus Christ through faith are born of the Spirit, become children of God and receive eternal life.

The Church

We believe the true Church is composed of all people who have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit through saving faith in Jesus Christ and are united together in the body of Christ of which He is the head. We believe the local church is an autonomous congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel; observing the two ordinances of Christ, governed by His laws, exercising the gifts, rights and privileges invested in them by His Word; that its officers are pastors or elders and deacons whose qualifications, claims, and duties are clearly defined in the Scriptures. While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture.

We believe the ordinances of the local church are believers’ baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Believers’ baptism is by immersion in water and is a testimony of death to sin and resurrection to a new life in Christ. Baptism is a prerequisite to the privileges of church membership. The Lord’s Supper is a memorial of the death of the Lord Jesus Christ until He come and continual fellowship with Him. All true believers and only true believers should participate in these ordinances.

Last Things

We believe in the personal, visible, imminent, pretribulational, and premillenial return of Jesus Christ. We believe He will then set up His earthly kingdom and rule for a thousand years.

We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead: of the believer to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord; of the unbeliever to judgment and everlasting conscious punishment.

The Family

We believe family has been ordained as the foundational institution of human society. It is composed of persons related to one another by marriage, blood, or adoption. We believe that marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in lifelong commitment. It is God’s unique gift to reveal the union between Christ and His church and provide for the man and the woman in marriage the framework for intimate companionship, the channel for sexual expression according to biblical standards, and the means for procreation of the human race. We believe children, from the moment of conception, are a blessing and heritage from the Lord.

Christian Responsibility

We believe the supreme task of every believer is to glorify God by living in the power of the Holy Spirit and seeking first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. Practically, this pursuit includes a commitment to spiritual growth, faithful giving, holy character, and personal service.
